everythingisteethShark Week is almost here and the library has just the thing to accompany the Discovery Channel’s annual celebration of one of the ocean’s most terrifying creatures.

While Jaws by Peter Benchley may be an obvious suggestion, here’s a list of more shark-themed books to feast upon:

The Devil’s Teeth by Susan Casey – A journalist describes how her fascination with great white sharks led her to Southeast Farallon Island, a remote island off the California coast, and to a group of biologists who study these fearsome, frequently misunderstood predators of the sea.

The Shark Club by Ann Kidd Taylor – Nearly two decades after surviving a shark attack on the Gulf of Mexico, a world-traveling marine biologist and respected “shark whisperer” harbors private insecurities that compel her to return to her Florida coast home to explore old and new relationships.

Demon Fish by Juliet Eilperin – A global investigation into the surprising ways in which people and cultures relate to and engage with sharks includes coverage of Papua New Guinea’s creation myths, the finning practices of mainland China and the counsel of a Miami shark-fishing guide to his celebrity clients.

The Encyclopedia of Sharks by Steve & Jane Parker – Discusses these misunderstood animals, covering their evolution, behavior, geographical ranges, reproduction, physiology, and place in mythology.

The Raft by Stephanie A. Bodeen – Robbie’s last-minute flight to the Midway Atoll proves to be a nightmare when the plane goes down in shark-infested waters, but the real terror begins after the co-pilot Max pulls her onto the raft.

The Raw Shark Texts by Steven Hall – Waking up in an unfamiliar place, unable to remember who he is, and attacked by a force he cannot see, Eric Sanderson discovers he is being hunted by a psychic predatory shark that may exist only in his mind but soon starts making some very real appearances in his world.
