Penguins With Personalities

Baby Penguins EverywhereIcy roads, freezing temperatures and slippery sidewalks are not cute. Penguins, however, are! While we are braving the cold temperatures this season, these flightless birds flourish in chilly climates all year round. If you’re looking for a good book to read with the kids after sledding, snowmen and snowball fights get boring, look no further. What better way to pass the time on a snow day than to snuggle up with your little ones and read about the adventures of adorable penguins?

JMRL has many books that feature personified penguins. Here are a few:

Baby Penguins Everywhere by Melissa Guion — A tale told through sparse text and energetic illustrations follows the mayhem that ensues when a lonely penguin discovers a top hat from which emerges a growing number of baby penguins who quickly become more mischievous and troublesome than their tired new mama anticipates.

Penguin and Pinecone: A Friendship Story by Salina Yoon — Penguin and Pinecone form an unlikely friendship, even when they must live far apart.

Penguin on Vacation by Salina Yoon — The intrepid hero from Penguin and Pinecone hits the beach after tiring of the cold and snow and is challenged to make a new friend and find different amusements when he realizes he cannot ski or skate on the sand.

Go Jojo Go!: A Little Penguin on a Big Swim by Tessa Bickford — Anticipating the day she will go to sea, a happy little penguin sheds her fuzzy baby down and grows a shiny coat before learning to swim across the biggest rock pool and diving into the sea between Australia and the Antarctic, in a tale featuring real-life photographs of Gentoo penguins on Macquarie Island.

Mr. Popper’s Penguins by Richard and Florence Atwater — The unexpected delivery of a large crate containing an Antarctic penguin changes the life and fortunes of Mr. Popper, a house painter obsessed by dreams of the Polar regions.

The staff at the library will be happy to help you find the book that is just right for you.
