Auto Renewals News at JMRL

Starting July 1, 2025
eligible items will autorenew!

About Autorenewals

  • Items that are eligible for renewal will automatically renew for 3 weeks from the original due date. This will happen 3 days before the original due date, when the first courtesy notice is sent.
  • Items that have been renewed will display the new Item Due Date in the notice.
  • Items that cannot be renewed will be due on the original due date, displayed next to Item Due Date in the notice.
  • Reasons your item may not have been renewed include the following:
    • the item is not renewable
    • the item has already been renewed the maximum number of times (2)
    • the item is on hold for another patron
  • Items returned after hours will be processed when the library reopens. If an item listed in this notice has been returned, it will be removed from your account at that time.

Courtesy Notifications

  • You will receive a courtesy notice 3 days before an item is due, an additional courtesy notice the day before an item is due, and the first overdue notice the day after an item is due.
  • There will be no separate email for items that could not be renewed, but they will be listed as RENEWED or NOT RENEWED in the courtesy notice(s).

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What will automatically renew?

A: Check outs after July 1st, all items (excluding bestsellers and ILLs) that have not been renewed twice, and do not have holds, will automatically be renewed from the items’ previous due date. Note: Teacher Card items will not automatically renew since they don’t have the renewal option.

IMPORTANT: This will NOT be a retroactive change! It only affects items checked out after July 1, 2025. Anything checked out before July 1st will have to be renewed manually.

Q: What will the notices look like? When will I get the notices?

A: You will be notified of your new due date via Courtesy Notice 3 days before the item’s original due date. Here is an example of what it may look like, showing both items that renewed and items that did not renew: Courtesy Notice Example – Library Items are Almost Due!

You will get Additional Courtesy notice the day before an item is due, with the email subject “Library Items Due TOMORROW!”  Here is an example of what it may look like:  Additional Courtesy Notice Example – Library Items Due TOMORROW!

And you will get your first Overdue Notice a day after something is due (Overdue Notice 1). Up to four Overdue Notices will follow!

Q: Will I get a separate email for items that did NOT renew?

A: Sort of! The Additional Courtesy Notice is sent the day before things are due, so generally items in that notice did NOT Automatically Renew.

Q: What if I did not realize an item could not be renewed because other patrons have reserved this item/it has been renewed too many times?

A: Please contact circulation@jmrl.org for more information.

Q: Will digital items in apps like Libby autorenew?

A: No, only physical materials may be eligible for autorewal.
